The brass case sits low and closed on a table, and it's only when you slide a coaster out that you see the dark bone tiles set into the top. Each coaster is stained bone laid in a fine grid, matte black against the warm metal, so the two materials read against each other rather than blending. It's made by hand, which shows in the way the seams between the bone tiles run slightly uneven.

Most coaster sets end up scattered; this one has somewhere to go. The matte black bone against the brass is a real contrast rather than a tonal one, and the hand-laid tile seams stop it looking machine-made.
