Shaped like a river stone and nearly as solid, this platter was thrown by hand at Kevala's workshop in Sanur, Bali — the same makers producing stoneware for some of the region's best hotels and restaurants.

The clay is Kevala's own blend, fired past 1200°C until the speckled glaze seals hard and smooth. Look closely and you can see the throwing rings spiralling out from the centre, and the flecks gathering thicker toward the rim where the glaze pooled in the kiln. The base is left raw and stamped with the maker's mark. Roughly 26 x 22cm with a low, rounded edge — generous enough for a shared table, weighty enough to stay put.

Set it at the centre of the table for cheese and fruit, or let it hold keys and sunglasses by the door. There's one of these and one only — when it finds its home, that's it.

The weight of it. This is a thick-walled piece that sits like a stone on the table, and the speckled glaze catches light differently at every angle. The throwing rings are still visible in the surface — you can trace the maker's hands in it.

Handthrown high-fired stoneware with a vitrified glaze. Food safe. The speckle pattern and throwing rings vary across the surface — part of the handmade process. Base is unglazed; use care on soft timber surfaces.

Cleaning: Hand wash with warm water and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive scourers on the glazed surface. Dry the unglazed base fully before storing.
