Radiating outward from a small central mirror, the Malawi has the kind of organic presence that only comes from work done by hand — the weave as much texture as it is frame. Each piece is built by artisans using traditional knotting and looping techniques, the layered rattan fibres sitting at slightly different angles so light catches unevenly across the surface. Slight variations in weave and shape are inherent to the process. It works well above a console or alone on a larger wall, where the scale of the weave holds its own without competing with surrounding pieces.
