Woven tight and low, with a wide flat face and a natural irregularity that holds the eye — each Makenge basket has a quiet, earned presence. Handmade by women artisans in Zambia using fibres from the makenge bush root, dried and dyed with natural plant materials, the surface moves between pale straw and soft ochre depending on the light. Works as a wall piece alone or grouped, or laid flat as a vessel on a shelf or console — no two arrive the same.

Root fibre, plant dye, slow work — the Makenge sits among the older traditions in our decorator pieces.
